The short answer

Electrolyte powder is a dry mineral mix you stir into water. It usually contains sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride, plus flavor and a sweetener. It arrives either as single-serve sticks or as a tub with a scoop. That’s the whole idea — everything else is a question of how much of each mineral, and what the flavor is built from.

What’s actually in it

Sodium

The one that varies most between brands, from roughly 88mg to 1,000mg a serving. It's also the one you already get from food all day.

Potassium

Works alongside sodium in fluid balance. Common in produce, and usually the second mineral listed on a panel.

Magnesium

Frequently added to hydration mixes; the form used (citrate, malate, oxide) is printed in the ingredient list.

Chloride & trace minerals

Chloride usually arrives with the salt source. Mineral sea salts also carry trace minerals — the producer of ours publishes an analysis listing 90+.

When it earns its place

Hot days and heavy sweat

You lose fluid and minerals faster than water alone replaces the taste of.

Travel and flights

Dry cabin air plus a long day is when most people quietly fall behind.

Training

Moderate sessions ask for a moderate mix; hours of hard sweating is a different conversation with your coach.

Ordinary desk days

The most common reason people use them, and the reason marathon-level sodium is usually overkill.

Notice how many of those are ordinary days. That is the case for a balanced mix rather than the saltiest one on the shelf — more on that in the low sodium hydration guide.

How to mix it

  1. 1

    Tear

One stick, one serving. No scoop, no guessing.

  2. 2

    Pour

Into 8 to 12 ounces of water — less water for a bolder flavor.

  3. 3

    Hydrate

Stir or shake until clear, then drink. Drink It, Live It, Feel It™

Electrolyte powder FAQ

What is electrolyte powder?

A dry mix of minerals — usually sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride — that you stir into water. It comes as single-serve sticks or a tub, and may be sweetened with sugar or a sugar-free sweetener.

How much sodium is in electrolyte powder?

It depends entirely on the brand. Published labels range from about 88mg to 1,000mg of sodium per serving. Hydrate Heroes® lists 88mg, which is 4% of the Daily Value.

How much water do you mix electrolyte powder with?

Follow the label. Hydrate Heroes® sticks are mixed into 8 to 12 ounces of water — less water for a bolder flavor, more for a lighter one.

Is electrolyte powder better than water?

It isn't a replacement for water; it's water with minerals added. Most days plain water plus normal meals is fine. A mix is useful when heat, travel, sweat or a busy day make it hard to keep up.

Can you drink electrolyte powder every day?

Many people do, once a day. The thing to keep an eye on is total sodium across food and drink. Anyone on a sodium-restricted diet should check with a healthcare professional first.
